Keyskills has also assisted those who didn’t do so well at school with English and Maths helping them to complete their course with confidence. The feedback from staff has praised you highly with all the support you give to them making it an enjoyable learning curve. An award-winning Sussex training company is expanding its workforce to cope with a huge surge in demand for courses.
baldwin training centre, based in Eastbourne, currently has a 23-strong team who provide quality training, but new trainers are now needed to ensure the company can meet the demand of more businesses throughout the south east.
The company, which was set up in 2003 by husband and wife team Andrew and Lynette Baldwin, has gone from strength to strength.
The new expansion programme follows swiftly on the heels of the news that the company has been awarded Beacon status which recognises the top providers in the further education skills sector.
It was also one of the first independent work-based providers to receive the Training Quality Standard and was awarded two "outstanding" categories in its first Ofsted inspection.
Last year a total of 400 learners were trained by the company, achieving a pass rate of more than 97% for level 2 learners.
In addition, baldwin training carried out a Literacy Awareness Week after being chosen by the Learning & Skills Improvement Service to be part of its ground-breaking scheme - Effective Practice Projects.
2010: Literacy Awareness within the Care Sector.
Rose pictured here is one of the latest learners to have benefited. She is employed as a support worker/carer in a local Nursing home, and knows that if she is to remain and progress in this job which she loves she must achieve an NVQ in Health and Social Care.
When the btc Employer Engagement Manager (Sandy Collins) first met her at the end of 2009 she was worried that this was not a possibility due to Dyslexia difficulties which have been a barrier to her achieving qualifications for over 40 years. When interviewed after winning a spellchecker during literacy awareness week at btc she said:
"When I was younger I hated school. If there was an errand to run I was the first to put up my hand. When Sandy asked me to write something I felt sick and wanted to go home, but Sandy understood how I felt and reassured me. I decided to have a go because I want to be able to complete records and take notes at hand over without looking like an Idiot. Doing the course has helped me considerably I am loving it, and want to get on and achieve. At first I met every week with my tutor on a one to one as I didn’t have the confidence to join a group. This boosted my confidence no end and now for the first time I can get my b’s and d’s the right way round without even thinking about it."
"In my job I am now able to write notes in a little book I carry around in my pocket. My tutor has also given me a little Key facts book which helps me and my colleagues with words we often have to write in care notes."
"Last week I joined a group session and was gobsmacked when my tutor told me she was arranging an assessor for me as I was ready after only a few weeks to start my NVQ."

2009: Beacon Status - LSC News Release.
Local training provider sets shining example (6th July 2009)
baldwin training
in Eastbourne is awarded Beacon status for providing outstanding training
to the care sector
A private training provider in Eastbourne,
baldwin training centre
(btc), is celebrating the rare honour of being
awarded Beacon status by the government’s Learning and Skills Improvement
Service.
The accolade was formerly presented to Lynette and Andrew Baldwin, who founded btc seven years ago, in a ceremony held earlier today at The Roof Gardens in Kensington, London. Awarded to colleges, sixth forms and, less commonly, private training firms, Beacon status is a ringing endorsement of the way a provider runs their organisation of the quality of the training they offer.
Talking about award, Lynette said, "We were absolutely thrilled by the news and more than a little bit surprised, because we are still a very young company and Beacon status demands such a lot of any organisation. It’s a tribute to the hard work and commitment of everyone at btc and we’re all delighted to be recognised as a company at the forefront of provision and a match for sector’s most established providers."
Lynette’s and btc’s success is made all the more remarkable by the fact that her experience in the sector began 30 years ago when she started working in a care home as a part-time cleaner. Thanks to the training opportunities extended to her, and her own determination, 17 years later Lynette had progressed to the position of home manager. In time she went on to do her Certificate in Education: Further Education and Training, with a view to setting up a training company that would extend the same training opportunities she had benefited from to other people.
Lynette cites her own and her staff’s extensive experience in the care sector and their ability to identify with the needs of employers and employees alike a major factor in btc’s growth and success. Today the business, which has helped well over 1,000 learners to achieve new qualifications, employs 22 members of staff and works with around 130 care homes across the south east.
btc offers courses and qualifications in every aspect of health and social care, from hands on care to allied disciplines such as team leading, management and customer services. For the last two years the business has been working with the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), offering Apprenticeships in the care sector and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) through the Train to Gain Service.
Congratulating btc on being awarded Beacon status, Marinos Paphitis, regional director for LSC South East, said, "This is a tremendous achievement and one which I hope will inspire other providers to aim for the highest possible standards in employer- and learner-responsive provision. Thanks to its commitment to quality, to personal and professional development, and to an inclusive society this excellent young company has continued to grow its business despite the economic downturn."
Moving in a new direction, and working in partnership with Sussex Action for Inclusion, btc launches a programme later this week aimed at unemployed people who would like to work in the care industry.
2008: Glowing Ofsted Report Rewards Five Years of Hard Work.

baldwin training
centre was established in 2002 and specialises in
delivering quality training to the Care Sector throughout the South East
of Britain.
When Lynette and Andrew Baldwin set up their training company five years ago they employed a three-strong team and hoped that work would follow.
Today Eastbourne-based baldwin training employs 27 people, works with more than 100 organisations in Sussex and Kent and is celebrating the result of its first Ofsted inspection which judged the company to be "outstanding" in two categories.Three government inspectors spent four days with the company, which provides training in the care sector, to look closely at its achievements and standards, quality of provision, and leadership and management.
On a four-point scale to summarise the company's performance, Ofsted awarded an overall Grade 2 (Good) with Grade 1 (Outstanding) in "Leadership and management" and "Capacity to improve" which looks at the the effectiveness of steps taken to make improvements within the business.
In addition, the company which trains more than 210 learners on government funded programmes and an additional 54 learners on private courses, has just been awarded the Training Quality Standard, created by the Learning and Skills Council to develop a new higher standard for training providers.
baldwin training is one of only 42 providers in the country to have been awarded the standard which recognises the best organisations delivering training and development to employers.
For Lynette and Andrew, who sold their house in 2002 to fund the start of the company, the recognition of both the Ofsted grade and the Training Quality Standard is a dream come true. "For our first Ofsted inspection, this is a fantastic achievement and it is great for our team to get the official recognition for what we do," said Lynette, who was a cleaner in a care home and worked her way up through the industry with training before achieving a Certificate in Education at Brighton University.
"We are absolutely delighted to be one of only 42 providers to have achieved the Training Quality Standard. We love what we do and it is great to see the positive impact that training has on both employers and learners - whatever their age. The appointment of our employer engagement manager, Sandy Collins, two years ago has played a large part in our success. She is in daily contact with employers to ensure training remains responsive to the needs of their organisation."
Administration manager Wendy Trotter said: "The ethos of the company is fantastic. There are great systems in place and everyone works as a team with everyone making a contribution towards the firm's business plan."
baldwin training is also a Train to Gain provider which gives employees who work in the care industry the chance to study for NVQs in care, Leadership and Management, and it also runs an apprenticeship programme for learners under the age of 25.
